The main light is placed directly in front of the face and casts a shadow (in the shape of a "butterfly") directly underneath, and in line with, the nose
Butterfly lighting is sometimes referred to as "flat" lighting, because of the lack of dramatic shadows.

Rembrandt Lighting :

The key in Rembrandt lighting is creating the triangle or diamond shape of light underneath the eye. One side of the face is lit well from the main light source while the other side of the face uses the interaction of shadows and light to create this geometric form on the face. This type of lighting is a combination of short and butterfly lighting.
